The open Appendectomy was the standard of care before the introduction of laparoscopic surgery. Most patients will qualify for a laparoscopic appendectomy. Some patients may need an open procedure for more advanced disease.
Dr Botha will make the final decision regarding the execution of procedure. Some medical insurance companies will not cover the laparoscopic procedure and the patient is required to check with their medical insurance company prior to any surgery. The procedure, risks and post operative are the same for open or laparoscopic appendectomy.
